My Thoroughbred was microchipped in Victoria. What are the additional Victorian Government requirements?
  • Legislation was enacted by the Victorian Government on 1 September 2009, which requires horses microchipped in Victoria to be recorded with a separate licensed registry. To assist Thoroughbred breeders to comply with the requirements, the ASB's microchip supplier, which owns one of the registries approved by the Government to record horses, is offering its services at a reduced rate to enter a Thoroughbred into its registry. To further assist, a preprinted PetSafe Register form will be included in the DNA kit sent to breeders in Victoria to provide to your veterinarian at the time of microchipping, if you choose to use this registry.

  • Foaling reference will appear in abbreviated form, either
    i) 42:1287 (volume:page)
    or ii) EL:20091116 (Equineline:date stamp) .

  • The country in which the horse was named.
  • For example, Ansto (AUS) 2003 - other names: sin Lucky Seven (AUS) means the horse was exported and renamed in Singapore.
How do I transfer the horse’s microchip into my name?
  • The microchip implanted in a Thoroughbred consists of numbers only, which can be read by stewards or Thoroughbred officials using a compatible scanner, to verify the identity of the horse. The chip is not linked to a registry that maintains ownership details, which is the case for microchips implanted in domestic animals.
